    • Welcome / Introductions:  Everyone was encouraged to initial the attendance roster.  New participants were asked to provide complete agency contact information.  All present introduced themselves and the agencies that they represented.  Thanks to: Audra Fyock, Healthy Start Coalition; Samantha Nevins, West Central Area Agency on Aging; Cindy Clifford, Lakeland Police Dept; Andi Foley, Lakeland Regional Medical Center; Veronica Ledford, Lakeland Housing; and John Hurt, Center for Independent Living for notice that they were unable to attend.  A year long attendance chart was circulated, letting participants view meeting participation.  Congratulations to Laura Stephan, DCF, for another year of perfect attendance.  Lou requested approval to have those removed from the web site, who have not attended any meetings for the past year.  Unanimous approval was granted.

    • Review of Minutes / Corrections:  Minutes were sent out for review, as well as being posted on the web site.  An apology was offered for accidentally omitting Michelle White from the list of participants for the October meeting.  The correction was made and minutes will be filed as noted, as no other corrections were submitted.
    • Feature Program Presentation(s):
      • Dan Simpson, Public Health Preparedness Coordinator with Polk County Health Department, presented on “Plan to Be a Survivor, Not a Victim”.  His theme was, “pay attention”.  He encouraged people to listen to forecasts and be prepared.  He shared a story of a man who saved his house from a wildfire by preparing his property and home.  Other tips included: Have keys ready when you leave the mall; watch your purse; don’t be a target for thieves.  He talked about terrorists using GPS, Google Earth Maps, and Internet phones.  They used almonds for energy, as well as cocaine at night to stay awake.  They created small diversions to pull first responders away and attract larger crowds before the “main event”.  In an Afghanistan training camp, they use a philosophy of “Why hunt tigers, when there are so many sheep”?  He indicated that events could happen here in the US, but our response would be different.  US would take an assertive stand.  He also spoke of a large chicken farm in north Lakeland with 1.8 million birds, and a reminder to be vigilant, as even Bird Flu has not gone away.

    • Falls Prevention Initiative:  A Falls Prevention Committee held their first meeting on Nov. 18th.  They began exploring programs currently available. The next meeting will be on Jan. 20th at 1:30pm at Family Fundamentals, when they will begin defining goals for the community.   They invite all who share an interest in fall prevention.  They plan to meet on the alternate months from CIP.  Samantha Nevins announced plans for a “Fall Prevention” seminar in the future.

    • The Silver Alert Program, similar to the Amber Alert, was explained as an emergency notification system, allowing immediate broadcast of information to the public, regarding missing elders with dementia or other cognitive impairment.  More than 4.3 million FL residents are 60+, with more than ½ million considered as probable Alzheimer’s cases.  With 95% of the state’s seniors living independently, hopefully, the program will help prevent a tragedy among one of Florida’s largest vulnerable groups.

      • Drug overdoses now the second leading cause of unintentional injury death in US
