    *      Coordinator’s Corner:

    Ø  The Dept. of Health’s State Surgeon General’s Weekly Update was shared.  The report focused on Trauma Awareness Day and traumatic injuries, which are the leading killer of Florida’s visitors and residents, ages 1 – 44yrs.  The trauma system partners reported a positive decreasing trend in Florida’s mortality rate.  Evidence-based programs, such as ‘Prom Night,’ ‘Shattered Dreams,’ ‘Prom-Promise’ and ‘Walksafe,’ have contributed to the reduction of trauma mortality rates.  With the implementation of ‘Prom Night’ and similar injury prevention programs, there were no deaths on prom night associated with motor-vehicle accidents in 2006, 2007, and 2008 where these programs were implemented.”

    Ø  The newest hurricane predictions were released by Dr. William Gray, which provided a time to remind us all to start our preparations for the approaching hurricane season.

    Ø  A Florida Injury Strategic Plan was provided, listing the leading causes of death for Florida residents in 2007.  “In 2005 (most current national data available), Florida’s age-adjusted injury death rates were higher than the national average by 17% for all unintentional injuries, 30% for unintentional motor vehicle injuries, 9% for unintentional senior falls, 46% for unintentional poisonings, 16% for suicides, and a staggering 143% for unintentional drownings among children ages 1 – 4yrs.”

    Ø  Two Safety Alerts were provided, including “How to Help Prevent a Home Burglary” and “How to Protect Yourself While Using an Automated Teller Machine”.
