The Alzheimer's Association - Florida
Gulf Coast Chapter is part of a national voluntary health agency
dedicated to providing education programs and support services to people
affected by Alzheimer's disease in 17 Florida Counties (Charlotte,
Citrus, Collier, DeSota, Glades, Hardy, Hendry, Hernando, Highlands,
Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Polk, Pasco, Pinellas, Sarasota and Sumter.)
The Association supports the nationwide
research effort, offers a variety of free patient and family services,
provides education and training and also serves as an advocate for
people affected by Alzheimer's disease.
Our Helpline is available 24-Hours a day, seven days a week.
The Polk County Office sends out a monthly newsletter and calendar of

The Lakeland
Fire Department provides a variety of fire and life safety educational
programs throughout the community of Lakeland, targeting children age
three through older adults. Our age-appropriate programs can be
tailored by content and time length. Our programs can be presented at your
location or you can bring your group to our station. We have
different programs for preschool, elementary, middle, and high school
groups, businesses, civic groups, home owner’s associations, and older
adult groups. Issues ranging from stop, drop, and roll to the proper
use of fire extinguishers are explained through the use of colorful
characters, videos, songs, active learning, and hands-on demonstrations.
Call to find out more about the programs appropriate for your group.
Requests for programs should be made thirty-five days in
advance.

Programs Project C.A.R.G.O. ~
Communities Addressing Responsible Gun Ownership - This is a one hour
program that was developed to provide public education on the problems of
handgun incidents and violence in the United States, as well as
preventative measures to reduce handgun injuries and death, especially
those involving children. This program is for ALL families with
children! Not just those with guns in their own homes. The program is
a partnership between the Polk County School System and the Trauma Center
at Lakeland Regional Medical Center (LRMC). Volunteers who present
in the program are from LRMC’s Trauma Services, the Sheriff’s Office, and
the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). At the
conclusion of the program a mother and father tell their story. Programs
are PRIMARILY coordinated through the school system, but is also available
to other organizations or interested groups.
At the end of each session, a
free trigger lock is given to each family when they turn in a program
evaluation form. Cost: Free

RSVP provides opportunities for people 55 and over to make a difference in their community through volunteer service. RSVP volunteers contribute anywhere from a few to over forty hours a week, serving through schools, community and service organizations, and other nonprofit and public organizations to help meet critical community needs.
RSVP offers maximum flexibility and choice to its volunteers.
